My
Tree

There is a tree, now gnarled and bent
Where my childhood’s happiest hours were spent
Within its leafy green embrace
I seemed to touch God’s holy face
I roamed in Summer, wild and free
And climbed in childish ecstasy
Up to the tip-top branch so high
To see if I could reach the sky
Then, heaven unreached, down, down I’d climb
With solitary joy sublime.
Now grown, I sometimes meditate
On how that tree has shaped my fate
Nearer to heaven my spirit grew
More than my childish fancy knew!
