The Church in the Wood

High on yonder hill
An old abandoned church once stood
Yet, in my cherished memories,
It remains deep within the wood.

Its ancient altar well worn by
Many a hand in prayer
The lingering touch of long ago
Of those who knelt in silence there.

On a tiny rustic, borrowed table
A Golden Cross was placed
To cast a gleam of Hope and Peace
To those who came in search of Grace.

Many a burden and sorrow was laid
Upon the altar with care,
Knowing the Master's Hand would bind
And keep them there.

The hallowed grounds now
Gone to sod and dust,
But the Great Almighty is eternal,
For in God we place our trust.
